Chapter summary: 

New Company Commander Lieutenant Buckland. Tommo and Charlie sent to Ypres. In the trenches. There is a bombardment. Lieutenant Buckland dies. Charlie goes missing, then returns injured and is taken to hospital. Charlie sent home. Tommo goes to the ‘estaminet’ to see Anna. Sergeant Hanley takes over the company.

Chapter Questions:

1. Based on the opening paragraph of this chapter, what is your best guess as to why Tommo is spending the night alone in a barn?

2. Why does Tommo give up all hope of Charlie returning to the dugout alive?
