Twenty-Five Past Three   Chapter 10

Chapter summary: 
New Company Commander Lieutenant Buckland. Tommo and Charlie sent to Ypres. In the trenches. There is a bombardment. Lieutenant Buckland dies. Charlie goes missing, then returns injured and is taken to hospital. Charlie sent home. Tommo goes to the ‘estaminet’ to see Anna. Sergeant Hanley takes over the company.

Chapter Questions:
1. Based on the opening paragraph of this chapter, what is your best guess as to why Tommo is spending the night alone in a barn?
2. Why does Tommo give up all hope of Charlie returning to the dugout alive? 
3. Tommo picks out two stars in the night sky. Who does he imagine these stars to be?
4. Who makes an unwelcome return to Tommo’s life at the end of  this chapter?
5. Use five words of your own to describe some of the different emotions that Tommo feels in this chapter.
6. Anna, the girl from the estaminet, reminds Tommo of Molly. Write about a time when you saw someone who reminded you of a person you know.

  1. Have a look on the Internet for the posters that were used for recruitment in WW1. There are lots of other posters warning people not to talk about the war, to black out their windows etc, but just focus on those that try to recruit men.  Share your impressions on padlet: https://padlet.com/rddietrich1/ifnnoyxw2c9u
