December 4, 6, 7  Global context and exploration:  Orientation in space and time: Natural and human landscapes and resources.
Key concept: Communication
Related concept: Purpose, context
Statement of inquiry:  Purpose and context inform (influence) the way we communicate the relationship between human and natural landscapes and resources.

Inquiry Questions:
Factual: What are the elements of an informative text?
How do we impact the environment on a daily basis?

Conceptual: How do we use language to express the impact of human action on the landscape?
What are the links between people and the environment (climate, landforms, vegetation and soil)?
What are the links between the natural environment and jobs?

Debatable: Are human-made landscapes, natural landscapes and resources mutually exclusive?
Do we really need all the resources we use and the space/things that we demand?

(A conceptual question: Conceptual questions are questions that require a student to create an answer rather than simply to recall something or to activate an algorithm. Conceptual questions are higher-order questions.)

Do we want to add/modify any of the inquiry questions? (Student questions have been added in blue)

Where to begin?  Define the following:
     What is a human landscape?
     What is a natural landscape?

Homework:  Unit 93 - Relative Clauses

The expanding human population, in concert with technological innovation, has had a considerable impact on Earth’s physical landscape over the past 200 years. Human needs are constantly evolving, greatly changing the ways in which we use land. Practices such as agriculture, deforestation, and urbanization have had a profound effect on the natural landscape, and as our numbers increase, their impact intensifies. We have entered into The Anthropocene, a new geologic epoch in which human activity drives and shapes Earth’s natural systems. We are increasingly taking land out of its natural state to meet our growing needs. The cause and effect relationship between our growing population and its impact on our planet is a complicated one that requires us to carefully consider how we are using one of our most limited resources, land.
